About This Call
The Silverthorne Art Board is seeking an artist or artist team to design and install an outdoor mural at The Art Spot Silverthorne Makerspace, located at the intersection of CO Hwy 9 and 4th Street. The fire station building is in a high-traffic area near the Bluebird Market, Indigo Hotel, Silverthorne Pavilion, Silverthorne Performing Arts Center, and the Blue River. The mural's intention is to draw visual attention to the building and convey a feeling of high energy and vibrant expression.
The successful design will appeal to diverse audiences, complement the fresh mountain vibe of the emerging downtown, have a welcoming tone, and highlight the building's 1970 style architecture. The mural should cover a minimum of approximately 40% of paintable areas on the building's south and east facing elevations. A design that wraps around or connects the two building sides is desired. Paintable surfaces include brick, trim, and the 3 garage bay doors; windows and glass entry doors may not be painted. Content that celebrates diversity is encouraged. Art may be representational or abstract. The mural may not contain advertising, logos, copyrighted images, political, commercial, religious, or sexual themes. Designs should be image-based, not word-based. Branding elements include a nod to the building's fire station history with dalmatian spots, and the colors black, red, orange, and yellow; however, inclusion of this branding is not required. Artists may include their name, signature, website, hashtag, and the year on the mural.
Artists must use high quality exterior paint that will withstand outdoor elements for a 3-year period. Sealants or anti-graffiti applications are encouraged. The stipend is $10,000 total, constituting full compensation for all services, goods, expenses, and materials. Payment will be 50% upon contract signing and 50% upon completion. Installation must be complete by July 23. This call is open to any artist or artist team with proven experience installing outdoor murals. There is no funding for travel reimbursement. Submit a minimum of one conceptual rendering of proposed artwork and a minimum of one example of existing work depicting the artistic style intended for the project. Up to one additional image may be submitted. Entry fee is $10.00.
