Out of the Box Utility Box Art Project

The City of Granbury and the Granbury Cultural Arts Commission are seeking original designs by Hood County artists to cover utility boxes, also known as traffic signal cabinets, with a total of 25 to be covered for project completion. This is an opportunity to be paid to have your artwork featured in public spaces and contribute to the artistic vibrancy of the community. Box dimensions are 56" tall by 151" around (approximately) - a wrap of that size will go completely around the exterior of the box. Selected artists will be paid a $250.00 stipend per design chosen by the person that will sponsor the box. Artists can submit up to three (3) design proposals.

Applicants must live or work as an artist in Hood County, Texas. Artwork submitted must reflect the natural beauty, history, and spirit of Granbury and must be of original design and personal execution. Selected artwork should be scalable to different sized projects including vertical and horizontal shapes, and due to different sized projects some cropping may occur. The original artwork submissions can be created in any 2D medium, with digital artwork requiring 300 DPI. No advertising, branding, commercial images, logos, photographs of people, or any wording are allowed.

All wrap designs are subject to TxDOT approval prior to installation. The wrapping cannot cover or obstruct the vents in the cabinet or the TxDOT sticker/number. The artist's work will be selected from submissions by the person that will sponsor the box. Entry fee is $25.00 with an additional media fee of $5.00. The Out of the Box Program's aim is to transform these metal cabinets into works of art, supporting efforts to create places that people will find vibrant, welcoming, and inclusive.
