About This Call

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority seeks one or more artist(s) or artists' team(s) to develop an Iconic Art Piece for South Terminal C at Orlando International Airport. The selection process involves two steps: Step 1 is a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process to select up to four (4) shortlisted artist(s) or artists' team(s), and Step 2 is a Request for Proposals (RFP) for those shortlisted artists or teams, with stipends included for all participants in Step 2.

The Iconic Art Piece will be located in a signature area of the multistory glass enclosed perimeter with a potential 60 feet wide by 80 feet tall footprint near the vertical circulation as part of the Arrivals Experience at the South Terminal. The artwork should provide a "wow" or arrival moment and engage viewers from both external and internal building spaces. The project should offer a monumental opportunity to reflect the community in a timeless, forward-thinking, and modern way. The artwork must reflect "The Orlando Experience®" design concept, which emphasizes light, water, Florida foliage, and harmony with the Central Florida environment. Iconic symbols for MCO are sky, garden, and water. The piece should be welcoming and innovative, reflecting many cultures and diversities at a global destination, and should be engaging from both interior and exterior during day and night, 24 hours a day.

Artists must have a national or international reputation, with art demonstrating a strong relationship to the outdoors or sincere sensitivity to the natural environment. Artists must have completed other public commissions on a similar large scale and have success in translating innovative concepts into large-scale public artworks. At least three references for significant public works are required. Submissions must include a professional resume, a letter of interest (maximum two pages, no less than 12-point font), a statement of approach, a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 digital images, and an optional video of previous projects. An annotated list of images indicating title, dimensions, materials, date, location, and brief description is also required. The selected artist(s) or team will be awarded a comprehensive contract covering artwork design and engineering, fabrication, materials, insurance, travel, public presentations, and all related incidental expenses. The Authority will provide installation; however, the artist or artists' team will oversee the installation. Installation must be complete prior to the South Terminal opening in 2021.
