About This Call

Oregon Contemporary is pleased to announce Jackie Im and Anuradha Vikram as the curators for the 2024 Biennial, to be presented in spring of 2024. The Biennial is a survey of works by visual and performing artists who are defining and advancing Oregon's contemporary art landscape. This is the seventh Biennial in Oregon Contemporary's series that began in 2010. The 2024 Biennial will be focused on curatorial themes of networks, community, care, and support. Rather than a hierarchical approach to artists' works, the goal is to present work that is timely and relevant to the communities of Oregon. In conjunction with the biennial exhibition, Oregon Contemporary will host a series of programs and performances over the spring. The 5000 square foot space serves as the key venue for the Biennial, with satellite programming locations to be selected by the curatorial team.

The curatorial themes explore the networks we use to provide care to each other and to ourselves, and how we find support and aid through family, friends, community groups, and other formal and informal systems. The 2024 Biennial will expand beyond the walls of Oregon Contemporary into other venues, neighborhoods, and public space to build a new network of creativity in convergence.

To be eligible for consideration, artists must have lived in Oregon as a primary residence for the last two years. Selected artists will receive a stipend to create new work for the exhibition. Submissions should include an artist biography (up to 300 words), an artist statement of interest (750 words or fewer describing current practice and how work fits with the Biennial themes), and up to 10 images and 4 media files (audio or video) of recent work. Applicants should indicate their area of work (visual arts, performance, activism/public, or other) and region or city. Optional questions address openness to site-specific presentations outside Oregon Contemporary and potential partnerships. Application deadline: March 3rd, 2023 at 11:59pm. Studio visits will occur May/June 2023, with artist notification and confirmation in Summer 2023. The Biennial exhibition and programming runs February-May 2024.
