About This Call

The Orange County Great Park Corporation seeks four public artists from all creative disciplines for six-month residencies in brand new arts studios located within the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. Artists from all areas of visual and performing arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature and poetry, design, and architecture are encouraged to apply. The residency program will provide artists with suitable studio space for studio work and open studio hours to routinely interact with the general public. Artists will be encouraged to present screenings, performances, exhibitions, workshops, and lectures to facilitate an exchange of ideas between the artist and the public. These scheduled activities will assist each artist in refining a final prototype of a proposed project for installation or production. The residency will conclude with submission of detailed project plans, work samples and prototype which reflect one or more themes in the stated vision of the Great Park.

Artists will receive a $7,500 grant stipend for their residency, paid in three installments: $2,500 at signing of an agreement, $2,500 at mid-point, and $2,500 at completion of project. Candidacy will be based on experience and intent, not a specific project proposal. Development of the project proposal will take place during the actual residency. Residencies will commence as early as July 2011. Selected artists will be expected to maintain specified artist studio hours during Great Park operating hours so that the public has opportunities for ongoing dialogue with resident artists. Studio sizes will range from 150–500 square feet depending on need. Shared spaces include a clean up room, rest rooms, storage lockers and a conference room. Residents will have access to the studio building from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Wireless internet access and basic overhead lighting and ceiling fans will be installed; however specialized equipment such as kilns or darkrooms will not be provided. Artists will be expected to bring their own tools and materials. Building code restrictions on some art production techniques and some types of materials will apply. Artists will be responsible for securing their own housing.

The program is open to adult artists (minimum age 18) from around the world who work in any discipline. A panel of art professionals will judge candidacy based on artistic quality, potential community impact, professional development, and compliance with selection criteria, including the artist's experience and interest in creating public outreach programs, potential to activate a new public space, interest in participating in Great Park public events, and work in relation to Great Park values of education, culture, history, design, recreation, sustainability, community service, and public health. Visual artists must provide up to six images. Literary and performing artists must provide links to writings, videos or audio files. Applications must include a completed application form, answers to all questions, and a resume. Entry deadline is April 8, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Notification of selections will be made by June 1, 2011. For further information, contact Toni McDonald Pang at [email protected] or 949-724-6667.
