About This Call

The Orange County Great Park Corporation seeks public artists from all creative disciplines for five-month residencies in artists' studios located within the Palm Court Arts Complex in the Orange County Great Park in Irvine, California. Artists from around the world in any discipline including visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, and interdisciplinary arts are eligible. Minimum age requirement is 18 years. Selection will be based on experience and intent, not a specific project proposal, with consideration given to artistic quality, potential community impact, professional development, and compliance with selection criteria.

Selected artists will receive a $7,500 grant stipend paid in three installments: $2,500 within 30 days of grant agreement finalization, $2,500 at mid-point, and $2,500 at conclusion of residency. Artists will be expected to maintain regularly scheduled studio hours for a minimum of 24 hours a month to provide opportunities for public engagement. The Artists Studios building includes three studio spaces ranging from 150–500 square feet, a project room for special exhibitions, performances, and film screenings, and an artists-only lounge. Facilities are equipped with large windows for natural light, overhead lighting, ceiling fans, space heaters, wireless internet access, television monitor, tables, chairs, ladders, projector and screen, and dollies. Specialized equipment such as computers and printers will not be provided. Resident artists will have access to the studio building from 8:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m. daily. Artists will be responsible for securing their own housing.

The residency will conclude with submission of detailed project plans, work samples, and prototype that respond to an element or theme of the Great Park. Plans may be implemented at the discretion of the Great Park management and board. Attendance at select Great Park or City of Irvine Board Meetings and staff meetings will also be required. Two artist residencies will commence as early as January 2013. Qualified artists not selected for current opportunities may be placed on an eligibility list for future residencies in 2013-14. Application deadline is September 25, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Notification of selections will be made by December 2012.
