About This Call

Open Orange 2019 is a juried exhibition organized by ValleyArts, open to artists in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut working in two-dimensional media. The exhibition will be held at the ValleyArts Community Gallery located at 400 S. Jefferson Street in Orange, NJ.

Artists 18 years and older may submit 1, 2, or 3 works maximum. All 2D original artwork will be considered, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, printmaking, and other works on canvas, paper, and board. Artwork must be no larger than 36 inches by 36 inches, dated, and produced in the last three years. The entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Jury selection is based on individual pieces of the artist's submission. The nationally prominent jurors are Nigel Freeman, director of the African-American Fine Art department at Swann Auction Galleries and appraiser on PBS's Antiques Roadshow, and Diedra Harris-Kelley, co-director of the Romare Beardon Foundation.

Application deadline is Thursday, April 11, 2019 at midnight MST. Artist notification will occur Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, 2019. Artwork drop-off is Friday, May 3, 2019 from 3pm-7pm or Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 12pm-4pm. The exhibition runs Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, June 8, 2019, with a reception and Best in Show announcement on Thursday, May 9 from 6pm-9pm. An artist talk and closing reception will be held Saturday, June 8 from 3pm-5pm. All accepted artwork must remain on display for the entire exhibition duration and be priced for sale. The Community Gallery will collect a 30% commission on all gallery sales. A $350 Best in Show award will be given to one selected artist. Artwork must be hand-delivered and unpacked at the gallery; mailing is not permitted. Framing must be professional standard and ready for hanging with attached wire; work without wire will incur a $15 hanging charge. All artwork must be picked up by the artist from 10am-1pm on Sunday, June 9 or 4pm-7pm on Monday, June 10, 2019.
