About This Call
Open Orange 2018 is a juried exhibition open to artists in the Tri-State area working in two-dimensional media. The exhibition will be held at the ValleyArts Community Gallery located at 400 S. Jefferson Street in Orange, NJ.
Artists 18 years and over may submit 1, 2, or 3 works maximum. All 2D original artwork will be considered, including painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, printmaking, and other works on canvas, paper, and board. Artwork must be no larger than 36 inches by 36 inches, dated, and produced in the last three years. The entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Submissions must be made online by midnight, Thursday, April 12, 2018.
Jury selection is based on the artist's whole submission. Nationally prominent jurors include Nigel Freeman (director of the African-American Fine Art department at Swann Auction Galleries, NYC, and print appraiser for PBS's Antiques Roadshow), Tricia Laughlin Bloom (curator of American art at the Newark Museum), and Mary Jane Van Zeijts (award-winning artist and owner of Studio 268). Artist notification will occur Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, 2018. Artwork drop-off is Friday, May 4, 3pm-7pm or Saturday, May 5, 12pm-4pm. The exhibition runs Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, June 9, 2018, with a reception and Best in Show announcement on Thursday, May 10, 6pm-9pm. An artist talk and closing reception will be held Saturday, June 9, 3pm-6pm.
Accepted artwork must remain on display for the entire exhibition duration and be priced for sale. The Community Gallery collects a 30% commission on all sales, with proceeds disbursed to artists within 30 days of the exhibition close. A $350 Best in Show award will be given to one selected artist. Artwork must be hand-delivered and unpacked at the gallery; mailing is not permitted. Framing must be professional standard and ready for hanging with attached wire. Artist pickup is Sunday, June 10, 10am-1pm or Monday, June 11, 4pm-7pm.
