About This Call

Denali National Park is seeking artists, writers, and composers for its 2019 Artist-in-Residence program. Applicants should focus on the theme "Staying Safe with Wildlife." Alaska Native artists and artists working in sustainable, recycled, or repurposed materials are strongly encouraged to apply.

About a half-dozen accomplished artists, writers, and composers are invited to spend ten days in Denali during summer 2019 (June-September) at their own expense. Residents receive a permit for limited access along the Denali Park Road and stay at a historic ranger patrol cabin with basic amenities (propane heater, range, oven, refrigerator, bunks, cooking equipment, and resource library). There is no electricity or running water. All residents must provide their own transportation to and from the park, supplies, provisions, clothing, and outdoor gear. No stipend is provided. Each resident may bring one adult guest. Residents must have a valid driver's license and be willing to drive according to prescribed rules. Summer residencies typically run nine nights, beginning Tuesday morning with orientation at Park Headquarters and ending Friday morning after leading a public outreach activity on Thursday afternoon at the Denali Visitor Center. Residents are each allowed to spend up to $150 for activity materials and supplies.

Participants are challenged to create works that convey a fresh perspective of Denali drawn from direct experience. Each participant volunteers to lead a public outreach activity with visitors and may choose to donate a finished work to the program collection. Digital and performance-based donations are preferred. Physical two-dimensional pieces should not exceed 48 inches in any dimension and be suitably framed for wall-track systems. Three-dimensional pieces should not exceed 24 inches in any dimension and may not require permanent installation or structural modification of park facilities. Composers should donate a PDF score with parts and program notes, plus a digital recording. While artists retain copyright, they grant permission for the program to use and publish artwork for interpretation, exhibits, and education. Applications are accepted online through CallForEntry.org from June 1 through September 30, limited to the first 250 submissions. Selection is made by panels including past participants, subject matter experts, local community members, and park personnel based on entry materials, vision, innovation, and demonstrated accomplishment. Formal invitations are typically extended by December 31, with public announcement early in the new calendar year.
