About This Call

In celebration of Denali National Park and Preserve's Centennial anniversary in 2017, the park is seeking a diverse suite of voices to help share the unique story of Denali through art. Alaska Native artists and artists between the ages of 16 and 25 are strongly encouraged to apply. The Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to exploring new ways for visitors to experience Denali. From hundreds of competitive applications each year, about a half-dozen accomplished artists, writers, and composers are invited by the park superintendent to spend ten days in Denali at their own expense during the following winter or summer. Visits include a permit for limited access along the Denali Park Road and time alone at a historic ranger patrol cabin.

All residents must provide their own transportation to and from the park, as well as any supplies, provisions, clothing, and outdoor gear. No stipend is provided. Each resident may bring one adult guest to stay within accommodations provided. Residents must have a valid driver's license and be willing and able to drive according to prescribed "Rules of the Road." Artists under the age of 18 will be required to have a parent/guardian chaperone during their residency. Winter residencies (one writer, one artist) may include up to four nights at the historic Upper Savage Cabin with no electricity or running water, plus six nights in shared apartment-style housing at Park Headquarters. Summer residencies (one writer, one composer, two visual artists) are scheduled between June and September at ranger patrol cabins in remote settings, typically consisting of a 14' x 16' cabin with propane heat, cooking facilities, and bunks.

Each participant volunteers to lead a public outreach activity with visitors and to donate a finished work to the program collection. All finished pieces are due by December 31 of the calendar year in which the residency takes place. For a two-year trial period beginning in 2016, the program will explore a preference for digital and performance-based donations rather than physical artwork. Two-dimensional donations should not exceed 48 inches in any dimension and be suitably framed for hanging on wall-track systems. Three-dimensional donations may not exceed 24 inches in any dimension. Composers are asked to donate both a PDF (including score, parts, and program notes) as well as a digital recording of the work. While program participants retain copyright of donated artwork, they are asked to grant permission without restriction for the program to use and publish artwork for the purposes of interpretation, exhibits, and education. Applications are accepted only through an online process hosted by CaFÉ (CallForEntry.org). Entries are accepted each year from May 1 through September 30 for residencies during the winter and summer of the following year.
