About This Call

LexArts Inc., in association with 2nd District Council Member Shevawn Akers and the LFUCG Corridors Commission, seeks artists to create public art that enhances the Oliver Lewis Way Bridge in Lexington, KY. The bridge carries State Highway 922 across Town Branch Creek and over active railroad tracks. The location is at the edge of the historic bourbon distillery district and will be a permanent feature within the 46-acre Rupp Arena, Arts and Entertainment district. This artwork will create a visual landmark within the community. The goal is to commission proposals by three experienced public artists for the site with the expectation of realizing one of the proposals the following year.

The project budget is $100,000 and is negotiable but must include travel, research, design, execution, insurance, taxes, site preparation, and materials. There is no application fee to enter. Applicants must submit a one-page artist statement describing public art experience and interest in the project, a current resume (no more than three pages), and up to 6 digital images of past mural or artwork in .jpg format no larger than 500 kb each. The deadline for artist qualifications is May 15, 2014. Artist notification will occur on May 30, 2014. The three selected finalists will have the opportunity to visit the site and meet with LexArts and community representatives. Finalists will be paid $2,000 to develop a design and will submit a proposal of composition, concept statement, and process. Travel expenses of up to $500 will be reimbursed for a site visit.

Selection will be based on artistic distinction, low maintenance and durability, public safety, resonance with Lexington's unique history and heritage, and contextual integration into the specific urban site. The submitted qualifications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of artists, arts professionals, and community leaders. Images from top artists will be exhibited in a gallery setting for public voting. Using public input as one component, the committee will identify three finalists. A review of the final design will be conducted by the selection committee, and one artist or artist team will be selected to realize their proposal. Finalist proposals are due July 31, 2014.
