About This Call
The City of Pompano Beach seeks an artist or artist team to design and install a mural on the side of Kelly's Chemicals in the alley behind the Bailey at 135 NE 1st Ave, Pompano Beach, FL. The wall measures 92 ft. x 14 ft. The mural will be located in the Historic District and should reflect the concept of bridging the gap between past and present through the evolution of the Historic District to a Creative Arts District. The design should resonate the importance of the City's history as well as its future significance. The mural must have a strong presence, improve the overall aesthetic of the building, and provide an attractive view for passers-by. No logos or words are permitted. The design does not need to cover the entire wall area but must activate the entire area and creatively use negative space in an abstract manner. An anti-graffiti coating must be applied to the finished product. Materials, design, and palette must withstand local weather and be amenable to ongoing maintenance.
The project budget is $6,400.00, which includes all taxes, fees, and equipment needed to complete the mural (such as cherry picker and paint). The City will prep the building side and provide a base color. The selected artist will be required to create a timelapse video as the mural develops. Staff will review and inspect the design at four stages: basic line drawing, 50% completion, 90% completion, and 100% completion.
Eligibility is open to local professional visual artists with experience implementing their work in the public realm. Submissions must include digital images of previous murals (minimum 3, maximum 8), resume, concept statement (limited to 500 words), and rough sketch of the proposed design concept. The subcommittee will select three finalists and request detailed designs; finalists will receive a $200.00 honorarium. The selection process is managed by the City of Pompano Beach Public Art Committee, with final approval by the City Commission. Broward County residents will be preferred. Application deadline: June 30, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Contact Laura Atria, Public Art Program Manager, at 954-786-4310 or [email protected].
