About This Call

Johnson County Park & Recreation District (JCPRD) seeks an artist or artist team to create a site-specific mural at Okun Fieldhouse, located within the Mid-America West Sports Complex in Shawnee. The mural will tell one of Johnson County's "water stories" by highlighting and celebrating the natural setting of the nearby Mill Creek and the Streamway Trail. The mural should feature native flora, fauna, birds, animals, waterways, and native trees from the area to inspire visitors to appreciate, discover, and protect these vital natural resources. The wall is approximately 4,500 square feet (25' H x 180' W) and made of sheet metal. The artist must ensure the mural is protected against graffiti and ultraviolet rays using durable, low-maintenance materials such as acrylic paint.

The selected artist will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and installing the artwork, including developing final design documents, executing the design on schedule, managing all installation aspects including UV and graffiti coating, providing maintenance and conservation instructions, and maintaining effective communication with all parties involved. The artist must also collaborate with JCPRD to develop and lead an educational program related to the artwork and participate in community outreach and dedication events.

Eligibility is open to professional artists residing within 500 miles of Kansas City, with preference given to artists living in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The Art Selection Committee will review artist qualifications and select up to three finalists to create concept proposals. Finalists will receive a $1,000 stipend to participate in the concept proposal process, which includes a site visit. Artists living more than 100 miles from Okun Fieldhouse will receive an additional amount up to $250 for travel and lodging. Submissions should include a CV/resume (no more than 3 pages), names and contact information for 3-5 professional references, up to 10 sample images of previous artwork, and responses to two questions about your interest in the project and your experience with site-specific mural installation projects. There is no entry fee. Submissions are made online through CaFÉ (callforentry.org).
