About This Call
Ogden City Council seeks to commission an artist or artist team to create public art for the 3rd Floor stairwell in the Ogden City Municipal Building. The selected artist(s) will collaborate with Ogden City Arts staff, project architects, and the 3rd Floor redesign committee to design and create public art that aligns with the vision for the third floor and the building's quality standards.
The Ogden City Municipal Building, completed in 1938, is a twelve-story Art Deco landmark designed by Leslie S. Hodgson and Myrle A. McClenahan. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, the building features a grand east-facing entrance with terra cotta-trimmed pavilion, symmetrical side wings, original marble dados, intricate metal and wood trim, decorative plasterwork, and patterned flooring. The building serves as the administrative hub of Ogden City and was restored in 2000 with seismic retrofitting and renovations. The city seeks an art piece that reflects the building's strong architectural heritage and Ogden's vibrant history as a historic railroad town built on hard work, entrepreneurship, grit, determination, and creativity, while also celebrating the city's natural landscape and diverse community.
The commissioned artwork will be prominently installed in the stairwell area between the second and third floors, visible from both levels. Artists specializing in three-dimensional works are strongly encouraged to apply. Proposals incorporating integrated lighting elements are welcome. Media and materials must be suitable for interior display, including glass, fiber/textile, filament, metalwork, stainless steel, and bronze sculpture. The selected artist will work with a licensed structural engineer to create a structural support plan. Art installations weighing between 500 and 800 pounds should be structurally feasible, depending on attachment method. The budget for this commission is $100,000, inclusive of all costs including design fee, engineering consultations, materials, fabrication, transportation, permits, installation, insurance, and prevailing wage requirements. Applicants must submit a letter of interest of no more than 700 words describing their reasons for interest in the project and how their work and experience relates to it. Entry deadline: July 18, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Work sample requirements: 10 images (required), 0-5 videos (optional), 10-15 total samples.
