About This Call
This project offers two simultaneous opportunities: direct purchase of existing and available sculpture (Call for Entry), and commission of a site-specific design (Request for Qualifications). Applicants may apply for both opportunities.
The Oerman-Roche Trailhead project seeks a site-specific design commission or existing sculpture available for purchase. The selected design should be welcoming and draw people to experience its peaceful, meditative qualities before entering the trail area. The design can incorporate natural materials such as stone, wood, glass, metal, or recycled materials. The placement will highlight the view looking west toward the mountain range through a curved, circular, or post and lintel design, situated in the western portion of the newly constructed trailhead and parking lot. The piece may incorporate unique, creative, and historic design elements, and should embody the Town motto: "The Gateway to Boulder Valley." It will provide a space that is educational, accessible, and useful for all age groups and abilities. The Historical Commission has prepared signage for the trailhead and favors incorporating their designs, which include a photograph of the same view from circa 1930.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents at least 18 years of age. Eligible applicants include creatives working in three-dimensional design, including public artists, sculptors, architects, and landscape architects. For the site-specific design commission, applicants may apply individually or as a team of multi-disciplinary professionals and must demonstrate experience with site-specific design. For the Call for Entry, applicants must submit up to six digital images of up to three existing sculptures available for purchase (two images per sculpture), a corresponding list describing the images (purchase price, installation costs, dimensions, title, narrative, etc.), a resume, and a letter of interest. For the Request for Qualifications, applicants must submit up to six digital images of completed public art or site-specific design work, a corresponding list describing the images (dimensions, title, narrative, budget, etc.), a resume, and a letter of interest. Semi-finalists will be paid a $500 stipend to prepare an installation plan or proposal. The budget for purchasing an existing sculpture is $30,000, covering all costs including site preparation, delivery, general liability and auto insurance, foundation construction, and structural engineering. The budget for a site-specific design commission is $30,000, inclusive of all associated costs including artist design fee, structural engineering, general liability and auto insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, site modification and restoration, travel, contingency, and other project-related costs. Questions must be submitted by email to Deana Miller, Cultural Arts and Events Supervisor, at [email protected] no later than Friday, July 24 at 12:00 p.m. Responses will be distributed as an Addendum to the RFP on the Town website and on the Rocky Mountain E-Purchasing website at www.bidnetdirect.com. Phone calls are not accepted.
