About This Call
SunCal is seeking an artist or team of artists to create permanent art integrated into the design of a 120-foot-long corten steel bridge spanning Rifle Range Creek at Oak Knoll, a proposed 935-unit residential development on 187 acres of the former Naval Medical Center, Oakland. The bridge, anchored by 30-foot-long stone-clad abutments and located at the intersection of Creekside Parkway and Creekside Loop, will serve as the primary access to the residential neighborhoods and will be viewed by pedestrians, motorists, and residents. Art opportunities may include designs utilizing the pedestrian railing, bridge structural components as points of attachment, or integration into the stone abutments. The art must exhibit strengths from multiple perspectives and be sensitive to the natural setting. Materials must be appropriate for a high-use environment, weather resistant, and low maintenance. Artists will work with SunCal architects and engineers on integration and will be responsible for the structural integrity of their design.
Eligibility is limited to practicing, professional artists residing in the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States. Applications must be submitted online through CaFE and include a resume, references, artist statement, and visual representations of past work (minimum 6 and maximum 12 images representing previously completed projects, with up to 4 video files permitted). Each image and video must include title, date of completion, location, dimensions, significant materials, and budget if publicly available.
A selection panel of art professionals, community stakeholders, and SunCal representatives will choose three finalists. The three finalists will each receive a $1,000 honorarium to complete their proposals. Finalist interviews and proposal presentations will be conducted in Oakland on May 26, 2017. Finalists' proposals must include an itemized budget, project timeline, project narrative, and maintenance requirements. The selection panel decision will be based on the strength of the proposal and past public art experience. The project budget is $150,000 and must cover all expenses including design, transportation, permits, insurance, materials, fabrication, and installation. Timeline: Application deadline March 3, 2017; notification of finalists March 20, 2017; project installation second quarter of 2018.
