About This Call
SunCal is seeking an artist or team of artists to create permanent art integrated into the Oak Knoll Retail Village Plaza design. The Oak Knoll community is a proposed 935-unit residential development on 187 acres of the former Naval Medical Center, Oakland. The Retail Village includes a full-service grocery, restaurants, and retail shops, with an intimately scaled pedestrian plaza at its heart featuring mature oaks. Art opportunities may include sculptural overhead elements, light environments, or designs incorporated into plaza hardscape and landscape. The art must exhibit strengths from multiple perspectives, be sensitive to the pedestrian setting, and be appropriate for a high-use environment with weather-resistant and low-maintenance materials. Artists will work with SunCal architects and engineers to integrate the installation.
Eligibility is limited to practicing, professional artists residing in the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States. Applications must be submitted online through CaFE and include an artist statement, artist questions, resume, references, and visual representations of past work (minimum 6 and maximum 12 images representing previously completed projects, with up to 4 video files permitted). Each image/video must include title, date of completion, location, dimensions, significant materials, and budget if publicly available.
A selection panel of art professionals, community stakeholders, and SunCal representatives will choose three finalists. The three finalists will each receive a $1,000 honorarium to complete their proposals. Finalist interviews and proposal presentations will be conducted in Oakland on May 25, 2017. The Oak Knoll Retail Village Plaza budget is $170,000. The project budget must cover all expenses including design documents, renderings, transportation and accommodation of artist, permits, fees, business license, insurance, materials, fabrication, site preparation, transportation, and installation. The selection panel decision will be based on the strength of the proposal and past public art experience.
