About This Call
SunCal is seeking a California artist or team of artists to create permanent public art for the Creekside Entry Park, a two-acre park at the primary entrance to the Oak Knoll community, a proposed 935-unit residential development on 187 acres of the former Naval Medical Center in Oakland. The art should be inspired by the experiences of those who practiced healing arts at the Naval Medical Center. Finalists will be provided with names of individuals who served at the Center and will be required to interview these contacts via email or phone so that proposals reflect firsthand experiences.
The art may be composed of landscape, hardscape, and/or three-dimensional form and should engage pedestrians enjoying the park. Artists must work with SunCal landscape architects to ensure integration into the park plan. Materials must be permanent, durable, weather resistant, and low maintenance. The public art budget is $200,000 and must cover all design expenses, transportation and accommodation, permits and fees, insurance, materials, fabrication, and installation.
Applicants must be practicing, professional artists residing in California, at least 18 years of age, with all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States. Applications must be submitted online through CaFE and include a resume, references, artist statement, and 6-12 images of past work (with 0-4 videos permitted). A selection panel will choose three finalists, who will each receive a $1,000 honorarium to complete proposals. Finalist interviews and proposal presentations will be conducted in Oakland in March 2017. The selection panel decision will be based on proposal strength and past public art experience.
