About This Call
The Mecklenburg County Health Department is commissioning public art for the Northwest Medical Clinic renovation project located at 2845 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC. The clinic provides immunizations, family planning, adolescent health, WIC services, vaccinations, and special health clinics to the community. The County is renovating the existing building and adding approximately 7,900 square feet, including opening up and adding light to the waiting, reception area and entryway, adding space to the lab and administrative areas, and updating the building to accommodate population growth and medical service needs.
This project is open to national and regional artists. Site opportunities have not been determined at this time and are open to discussion by the project design team. Both exterior and interior sites should be considered. The project budget is $57,000. An Artist Selection Panel comprised of representatives from the Public Art Commission, The Arts & Science Council Board of Directors, Mecklenburg County Real Estate Services, project design consultants, the agency, and community stakeholders will review applications and recommend finalists. The Public Art Commission and Board of the Arts & Science Council will approve and contract with the artist. The selection panel will meet in fall 2006, with an artist commissioned by early 2007.
Applicants must submit: an artist's statement (maximum 2,000 characters), a current professional resume including public art experience with past project budgets, an annotated image list with dimensions, number, date of execution, title, descriptive notes, media, and location of work, and a list of four professional references. No original artwork, photographic prints, maquettes, or other physical materials will be accepted. Applications primarily consisting of gallery scale work or digitally produced proposals will not be accepted. Artists who have received a commission or purchase for over $25,000 cannot be considered for another commission or purchase for three years after the date of a signed contract. ASC staff, County or City staff, Public Art Commission members, or their immediate families are not eligible. Applicants must be willing to complete artwork that is a unique reflection of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Submission deadline: October 31, 2006 by 5:00 p.m. MST. Applications must be submitted electronically through CaFÉ at www.callforentry.org. There is no application fee.
