About This Call
Stapleton announces a public art commission opportunity with a $100,000 award for a civic plaza at NorthField Town Center in Denver.
The project focuses on a 100 feet by 190 feet civic plaza at NorthField Town Center that will function as a major gathering and meeting place. The plaza is framed by restaurant, retail and office space on the east and north, with streetscapes defining it on the west and south. A three-story building with a glass façade on the east will serve as a backdrop for the plaza. The northern end features a circular "stage" area for planned events including holiday celebrations and concerts. The plaza surface will be stone pavers in a geometrical pattern, with four larger sod areas bordered by benches, ornamental lights and ornamental trees. A fountain area highlights the southern end. NorthField occupies the space of the former Stapleton International Airport's north-south runway. While an aviation theme is not required, natural elements such as wind movement, light or sound would be appropriate. The Committee is not seeking a water piece.
The artwork must be designed to be durable, require low maintenance and low cost maintenance, and withstand Denver's intense sun and temperature extremes. Sustainability is a major goal of the development. The artwork could suggest energy conservation and/or use of alternative sources of energy, and may incorporate recycled materials. Applicants must be legal residents of the United States. Applications must include a current resume, eight digital images of relevant work with annotations, an artist's statement not exceeding 250 words addressing suitability for the site, and for sound-based work proposals, separate VHS or DVD materials postmarked by the deadline. Three finalists will be invited to submit full proposals and receive a design fee. Final selection will be made by the Project Selection Committee, reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Committee for Stapleton, and referred to the Board of Park Creek Metropolitan District for final approval.
