About This Call

Rogers Lake is located in the Upper Verde watershed and is a regionally significant, high-elevation wetland in the largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in North America. The area features a rich cultural history with prehistoric sites dating back 5,000 years, old railroad beds and log structures from Flagstaff's sheep herding and logging era, and sweeping panoramic views of the San Francisco Peaks, Woody Mountain, and Woody Ridge. The remote landscape provides inspiration for artists and serves as an open studio for creation and contemplation. The location is currently limited to seasonal access and is a 20-minute van ride from the Northern Arizona University Campus.

The program offers two three-week sessions in summer 2015: Session One (June 7-28) and Session Two (July 12-31). Both emerging artists (undergraduate students) and professional artists (not enrolled in undergraduate programs) are invited to apply. Applicants submit five images of current work and a proposal for self-directed study. Special consideration is given to artists who teach at the post-secondary level and bring five students to the residency; program fees are waived for these participants. Studio space, basic woodworking equipment, easels, wood, panels, canvas, and gesso are provided. On-site faculty offer workshops on using basic woodworking tools to create and stretch canvas.

Emerging artists receive housing on the NAU campus with daily van transportation to Rogers Lake, breakfast and dinner at the University Dining Hall, and a sack lunch transported daily to the residency site. Professional artists have access to limited housing at the Rogers Lake site with kitchen facilities and are responsible for their own meals. Staff organize weekly trips into town for professional artists without cars. Program fees are $2,175 for emerging artists and $1,470 for professional artists. Priority application deadline is April 13, 2015, with rolling admission thereafter. Entry fee is $25. International artists are eligible.
