About This Call
The Artist Residency at Rogers Lake is a unique residency program located in Flagstaff, Arizona, welcoming both emerging and professional artists to work together in the natural setting of Rogers Lake. Emerging artists are those still in undergraduate or graduate degree programs; professional artists are at varying career stages but not enrolled in a degree program. The program honors both collaborative exchange and individual focus.
Rogers Lake spans 2,250 acres of protected land in the Upper Verde watershed, featuring high-elevation wetlands, wildlife including elk, black bear, pronghorn, bald eagles, and migrating waterfowl, and sweeping views of the San Francisco Peaks. The area has rich cultural history with prehistoric sites dating back 5,000 years and structures from Flagstaff's sheep herding and logging era. Located 20 minutes from Northern Arizona University Campus, the property is surrounded by the largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in North America. For summer 2016, two three-week sessions are offered: Session One (June 6-27, 2016) at $1,650 and Session Two (July 6-30, 2016, already booked). Studio space, housing, basic woodworking equipment, lithography printmaking, easels, and canvas-stretching supplies are provided. On-site faculty offer workshops on woodworking tools. A communal kitchen is available; meals are the responsibility of artists. Limited housing is available with priority given to early applicants. Staff organize weekly trips into town and opportunities include a private tour of James Turrell's Roden Crater and participation in community-based art projects including the Western Drawing Project with guided hikes at Wupatki National Monument. Each session concludes with an exhibition opportunity at Flagstaff Modern & Contemporary Gallery. Teachers at the post-secondary level who bring five students receive waived program fees. Applications require five images of current work and a proposal for self-directed study addressing the uniqueness of Rogers Lake and the Flagstaff area. Entry fee: $25.
