About This Call
The Northeast Levy Regional Senior Center Public Art Menu Project invites professional artists, artist teams, and arts organizations living in Chicago with a demonstrated history of completing permanent, large-scale public art projects to submit qualifications to develop an outdoor mural for the north façade of the Levy Center. Senior artists are encouraged to apply.
The artwork area is approximately 16.25' H x 56' W (total wall dimensions approximately 20' H x 56' W). Artwork will likely be removable and re-attachable as weatherproof panels fastened to the wall at mortar lines. Designs will not engage the first 3.75' of the wall above ground level to avoid damage from snow and salt. The anticipated lifespan is a minimum of 3 years, though the artwork is intended to remain in place as long as possible if it remains in good condition. Successful proposals will approach the site with a bold and creative vision emphasizing the significant roles of seniors and the Levy Center in the community, making passers-by aware of the cultural, social, and practical resources available at the Center while honoring the contributions of seniors to the Ravenswood neighborhood and Lincoln Square community.
Applications must include 6-10 images of past large-scale public art and infrastructure projects, an annotated image list with title, media, year completed, dimensions, location, project budget, timeline, and commissioning entity for each image, and optionally one video edited to no more than 2 minutes. Following the application deadline, a selection panel will review submissions and select 3-4 finalists to develop design proposals. Finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium. The selected artist or team will receive a $50,000 commission, inclusive of all costs for design through fabrication, site preparation, and installation. Selection criteria include artistic excellence and the artist's connection to place and the Levy Center's mission.
