About This Call
North Seattle College and the campus Arts Council are seeking an artist to design a dynamic, innovative mural on the exterior surface of a wall facing the northeast entrance to campus. This project is open to all artists internationally.
The building wall is concrete and measures 41 feet in length (wrapped around a corner, with one wall 23' and the other 18'). The mural should aim for around 8' in height. The design need not be rectangular and may dip above and below the 8' mark. The chosen design will successfully integrate a strong understanding of design, color and composition while speaking to the community and values of the campus. Designs should avoid direct and literal representation of cultural diversity. Color is encouraged.
Artist Compensation: $5,000 to include design fees, a detailed list of supplies and materials needed including a to-scale gridded image to work from, 2-3 speaking appearances on campus, artist compensation, travel expenses and any applicable taxes. Once chosen, the artist will provide a to-scale design and color numbers for each color in the palette, a detailed supply list, and a gridded version of the design for students to use for transfer. Students, under the direction of experienced faculty, will complete the actual transfer and painting of the mural. The chosen artist will have the opportunity to speak with students to express their vision but will not paint alongside them except for one or two days during their campus visit.
Submissions must include 6 digital images showing the design proposal and relevant past work. Images should show how the design would look in the setting. The proposed design must be drawn/rendered to scale and represent how it will look when hand-painted by brush. A selection panel comprised of North Seattle College Arts Council members, campus students and staff will review all materials. Selection will be made by mid-March 2016. Artist talk and presentation of design to the mural class is scheduled for April 11th or 13th and must be on campus. The mural will be created and completed in Spring 2016, with a campus-wide celebration on June 15th or 17th, 2016.
