About This Call

The Tim C. Crummett Family Charitable Fund is seeking artists to create a commissioned, site-specific public art mural for North Kansas City. This mural will serve as a long-term attraction to entice residents and visitors while celebrating the city's history and heritage.

Eligibility: Professional artists or artist teams residing in the United States with public art project experience matching the scope of the project and who have successfully managed and completed at least one publicly-funded commission on schedule and on budget. Applicants must submit 3-5 work samples.

The mural will be installed on the east wall of EXLTUBE, Bay 4, along Burlington Street, North Kansas City, MO 64116. Premium consideration will be given to designs that tell a story, illustrate the city's industrial and railroad heritage, local identity, and cultural diversity, and enhance the public and pedestrian environment through artistic expression. Materials and designs must be durable enough to withstand severe weather and harsh conditions without extensive maintenance. The mural must be coated with a clear UV protectant paint to protect from graffiti and ultraviolet rays.

Compensation: Up to $55,000 for the commissioned piece, including all costs associated with the project (site visits, surface preparation, paint/materials, scaffolding, labor, and contingency costs). Artists will be paid one-half upon awarding of the commission and the remaining amount as arranged by contract. Artists are responsible for all site preparation work and installation.

Application Requirements: Letter of interest, current resume, color scale rendering (no larger than 8.5" x 14") of the proposed design, short narrative of the proposed work, interpretation of how the art fits the North Kansas City community, lead artist's qualifications and examples of previous work, work plan including surface preparation and clear coat specifications, project timeline, and cost estimate. The artwork must include a small painted dedication area in the lower right-hand corner to acknowledge the Tim C. Crummett Family Charitable Fund and EXLTUBE. Visual imagery must be appropriate for all audiences and cannot contain advertising, partisan politics, sexual, or religious content.

Deadline: July 9, 2021 at 5:00 PM. Contact Kim Nakahodo at [email protected] or 816-412-7814 for questions.
