About This Call

Scottsdale Public Art is accepting qualifications from artists for a temporary public art installation at the North Indian Bend Wash water treatment facility. The selected artist(s) will create a temporary art installation at the site of the City of Scottsdale Water Resources Department's North Indian Bend Wash water treatment facility, with a target installation date of March 2013. The temporary nature of the art could be extended for several months, depending on the materials and quality of the installation and any maintenance needs for the artwork. Total project budget is approximately $100,000.00.

The temporary installation will be located at the North Indian Bend Wash water treatment facility, currently under construction. Opportunities to site a temporary installation exist in landscaped areas of decomposed granite and plantings surrounding the facility's security wall, including retention basins and berms. The facility is in the heart of the North Indian Bend Wash Superfund site. Artists with experience in environmental or land art will be most competitive. Applicants must have demonstrated experience with temporary installations located outdoors. Shortlisted artists will be invited for an in-depth site visit to the water treatment facility to explore the site, learn the issues related to the site, and understand the surrounding environment and community.

The temporary art should address and creatively reflect the character of Scottsdale and Motorola and their efforts to provide clean, safe water for the community. A successful temporary public art project in this setting will both engage and educate audiences in the understanding of their environment in a manner impacting both motorists and pedestrians on the streets, sidewalks and canal paths that pass the facility. The budget includes costs of purchasing materials and the artist's time for design, fabrication, installation and de-installation, as well as travel and conference calls between the artist and the project team. An artist-selection panel will evaluate submissions and compile a shortlist of artists to interview. Selection criteria include: the applicant's professional qualifications; proven ability to undertake projects of a similar scope; artistic merit as evidenced by the submitted materials; and demonstrated ability to work with government agencies and stakeholders in the creation of a temporary art project. All artists are eligible to apply. Submission requirements include 3-5 digital images. Application deadline: January 16, 2013 at midnight MST.
