About This Call
The Art in Public Places program seeks an artist or artist team to create a site-specific commission project for the North American Wind Research and Training Center (NAWRTC) in Tucumcari, New Mexico. The Local Selection Committee is interested in artwork that is representative of wind energy. Artists experienced in creating wind-driven kinetic artwork are encouraged to apply, though due to limited budget, "kinetic" is defined in the broadest sense.
The project encompasses four locations: landscaped areas adjacent to the main entrance (for free-standing artwork), a curved stucco wall surface approximately 19' high by 60' wide on the front façade, eight 8' diameter windows visible from interior and exterior, and the expansive lobby with a high ceiling sloping from 34' to 27' and measuring 17' wide by 97' long (free-standing artwork not considered for lobby). Media must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, suitable for exterior display, safe for children and adults, and ADA compliant. Artwork may require certification by a licensed structural engineer and review by a professional Fine Art Conservator at the artist's expense.
Eligibility is open to all artists or artist teams who are legal residents of the United States. Faculty and staff of Mesalands Community College are not eligible. $64,300 is available for the project, including all fees and expenses (materials, equipment, labor, permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, shipping, identification plaque, and documentation). Up to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal and receive a $1,000 honorarium plus a travel stipend based on distance. The selected artist will be required to enter into a Professional Services Contract with the State of New Mexico. Submission deadline: December 16, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Ten images of previously completed work required.
