About This Call
NJ TRANSIT is seeking one artist to design, fabricate, and install a mural on glazing at Platform H level of Newark Penn Station as part of the station's modernization project. The locations for the art are identified at two separate spaces on the skylight panels. The artist should use permanent, vinyl material that is sustainable, requires minimal maintenance, and is appropriate for a public setting.
The total project budget is $100,000, which shall cover all costs incurred by the artist including design fees, engineering services, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, and assistants. The selected artist will be required to complete NJ TRANSIT Rail Safety Training and/or Amtrak Rail Safety training. Three finalists will be selected to make full proposals and will each receive a $1,000 stipend for proposal preparation and presentation.
Eligibility: Artists must live within 150 miles of the New Jersey border and be at least 18 years old. Submission requirements include a letter summarizing interest and experience in public artworks, three references, current resume, and work samples (4-6 images and/or up to 1 video). The selection committee will evaluate proposals based on artistic quality, appropriateness to site, permanence and durability, absence of public hazards, vandalism protection measures, innovation, coordination ability, timeline feasibility, and budget compliance. Finalist presentations are scheduled for August 20-30, 2024, with project installation required by December 2, 2024.
