About This Call
The New Jersey DEP Coastal Management Program (CMP) and New Jersey State Council on the Arts are seeking artists to create community-based art installations in New Jersey's coastal zone. This opportunity is part of a risk communication campaign funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to increase public awareness of coastal hazards including flooding from sea-level rise and coastal storms, and to inform the public about actions they can take to reduce their risk.
Four community-based organizations (CBOs) have been selected and will be paired with artists or artist teams to develop and implement art installations in specific locations within the coastal zone. Artists must be age 18 or older and either current New Jersey residents or live within 100 miles of the New Jersey state border. Any art form is considered (visual, literary, performative, new media, etc.) provided no new environmental disturbance results and no impact to environmentally sensitive areas. Art installations should be located in existing public spaces and could include murals, light displays, installations, public performances, sculptures, or interdisciplinary art installations. Each CBO has determined the appropriate art form for their location. Artists working collaboratively may apply as a team but must submit one application and accept the $12,000 stipend as total funds for the project, including artist fees for all team members.
Submissions must include a narrative of no more than two pages (10-point font or larger, 1.5 spaced) describing the proposed project idea, its scope, and desired outcomes, along with work samples. Artists should submit 4-10 images and up to 2 videos (4-12 total samples maximum) of previously completed artwork. Submissions must be able to be realized within the $12,000 project budget, inclusive of all known costs and required resources. The $12,000 stipend can be used toward project costs, supplies, travel, and artistic fees. Some CBOs may provide additional supplies, equipment, and in-kind services. Art installations and public programs are anticipated to be underway between Spring and Fall 2024. Artists will be notified of selection outcomes no later than October 30, 2023. Applications must be submitted by September 5, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT via www.callforentry.org. Only one submission per artist or artist team is permitted.
