About This Call

NightVisions 2022: Cultural Interpretations of the Night Sky is an international juried art exhibition at Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Arizona, produced by Creative Flagstaff in collaboration with Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition. In its 8th iteration, the exhibition expands to honor the legacy of Flagstaff astronomer Carolyn S. Shoemaker and her collaborations with husband and geologist Eugene Shoemaker, with the inclusion of archival astronomical elements alongside the work of contemporary artists. Co-curator David Levy, an amateur astronomer and science writer, and three renowned artist jurors—Joseph McShane, Paula Jean Rice, and Jerrel Singer—will select artwork from an international pool of submissions. The exhibition will coincide with the grand opening of CCA's new Digital Resource & Education Center in May 2022. $2,500 in jurors' awards will be announced at the opening reception.

Flagstaff is the first International Dark-Sky City, a designation recognizing the community's extraordinary commitment to night sky protection, which began with the world's first regulations protecting the night sky over 60 years ago. These efforts were at the foundation of a global movement to protect night skies and continue through the efforts of the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition.

Artists may submit work in any medium, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, video, multi-media, writing, and performance. Proposals for sculptural installations are welcome. Submit up to three artworks (video examples under 10 minutes). 2D drawings and photographs must be framed, with any alternate display methods clearly described with submission. Entry fee is $35 for regular submissions or $25 for CCA members, covering one application of up to three works. This fee is non-refundable. Open to all artists 18 and older working with themes of the night skies. Entry Deadline: February 25, 2022. Exhibition runs May 7 – August 27, 2022. Opening reception and keynote address: May 21. Artists are responsible for all delivery, shipping arrangements, and costs, including insurance during transit. Flagstaff Arts Council will retain a 30% commission on all sales after processing fees.
