About This Call
Up to ten artworks will be selected and showcased for two years in Civic Center Park, a 14-acre ocean-view site in Newport Beach designed by renowned landscape architect Peter Walker as an intended sculpture garden. The park serves as a destination for residents and visitors for events, summer concerts, art shows, docent-led sculpture tours, and recreational activities. As home to City Hall, administrative offices, and the Central Branch of the city's public library, the Civic Center is the heart of Newport Beach.
The City seeks a well-balanced exhibit of public art emphasizing a variety of styles, types, and sizes with a diverse pool of artists. Selection criteria include artistic merit (substantial professional qualifications and high-quality original work demonstrating originality and excellence), durability (high-quality materials that can withstand coastal Southern California elements for a minimum of two years), site responsiveness (appropriate scale, material, and content for the environment), and meeting minimum requirements. Artworks must be readily visible from interpretive trails, suitable for viewing from all angles, and appropriate for audiences of all ages. Artworks will be installed on concrete pads or footings; special installation requirements must be explained in the submission.
Eligibility is open to professional artists and artist teams, private collectors, galleries, and museums/non-profit organizations in any country. Applicants must be over 18 with a limit of one finished, original artwork per artist. Submitted works must be complete, installation-ready, and physically located in the United States at time of submission. Works must be available for delivery during June 1-16, 2023 for installation. The exhibition runs June 1, 2023 to June 1, 2025. Budget is up to $5,000 honorarium, all-inclusive, covering transportation, insurance, and artist honorarium. Submissions must include 2-4 images of the artwork, title, date, 30-word maximum description, materials, dimensions, weight, installation instructions, estimated value, current location, previous exhibition history, resume/CV, and three professional references.
