About This Call
The City of Newport Public Art Program seeks artists to create one mural or other two-dimensional art installation for the restroom building (all four sides, excluding doors) and one for the pump house (front and two sides, excluding doors and back). Both structures have walls made of highly textured concrete hollow blocks, which may be challenging for traditional murals. Other two-dimensional art attached to the walls will be considered.
Artists must supply all necessary materials, paint, and anti-graffiti varnish finish designed for outdoor use in a coastal environment with salt air and high winds. All costs for transportation and accommodation in Newport are the artist's responsibility. Artwork must be original design suitable for viewing by all ages, with no images of sex, violence, drugs, or alcohol. All artists must be over 18 years old. Maintenance is the artist's responsibility for 5 years. Artwork must include the language: "This mural made possible by the City of Newport (logo) and OCCA (logo) through the Public Arts Program 2026."
Submit 1-3 images of your design by March 13, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. Entry fee is $25. Artists will be notified in April 2026, with installation in Summer 2026. Compensation: $8,000 for the restroom (Lee St and Bay Blvd) and $16,000 for the pump house (Hatfield St and Bay Blvd). Evaluation criteria: Visual Impact (40%), Composition and Design reflecting Newport's historic bayfront and integrating poetry (40%), and Artist Experience (10%).
