About This Call

Munich Terminal One LLC and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts are accepting submissions from adult professional visual artists who are current residents of New Jersey for a 3-5 year exhibition in the new Newark Airport Terminal A Concourse. The project will be unveiled in Spring 2022 and remain on display for between 3 and 5 years.

Selected artists will receive a $25,000 stipend for use of their work. Up to three artists will be selected. Munich Terminal One/PANYNJ will print the selected images, install them as "wraps" on display locations, update the wraps as needed during the exhibition period, and provide promotion of the exhibition. Artists' names and image information will be included with the display and shared through PANYNJ and the State Arts Council's social media and communication platforms. Artists retain copyright to their work.

Artists should submit up to 6 examples of completed work. For this project, selected artists will be asked to provide 2 completed, horizontal images with compositional flow, visual appeal, and a sense of movement. Images should be able to meet the compositional needs of approximately 112'-130'10" x 6'9" wall spaces and hold up when enlarged to that scale. Appropriate submissions include completed horizontal paintings, digital compositions, panoramic or digital photographic images/compositions, or illustrations. Moving images (films, animations, etc.) and performative work will not be considered. Work that could be interpreted as political, sexual, or violent in nature will not be considered.

Work encompassing the curatorial themes is preferred but not required. Themes include: the story of New Jersey and its diverse people, places, and geographies; New Jersey as a year-round destination with cultural, historic, and innovative opportunities; and looking forward to the future of New Jersey with themes of Innovation, Diversity, Entertainment, and Location. Abstract work may also be accepted.

Eligibility: Artists/artist teams must be at least 18 years of age, have a verifiable professional exhibition or publication history, be legally able to complete a contract with PANYNJ and/or their contracted management, and be current residents of New Jersey. Artists must be able to work effectively and collaboratively to provide requested digital image files in a timely manner and must provide an Artists' CV and references for previous exhibition/publications or commissions.

The Art Selection Council will review submissions based on artistic excellence, potential to promote program goals, potential for positive experiences with the work by New Jersey communities, artist's professional experience, safety and environmental considerations, feasibility of using submitted images as proposed or with minor changes, clarity of the proposal, and consistency with the opinions, values, and aesthetics of the Port Authority and Munich. Decisions will be announced by the end of January 2022.
