About This Call

The New Mexico Arts public art program seeks contemporary artwork for the New Mexico State Tri-Lab Facility, which houses the state public health and environmental health testing laboratories of three state agencies: the Scientific Laboratory Division of the Department of Health, the Veterinary Diagnostic Service of the Department of Agriculture, and the Office of the Medical Investigator.

Artwork placement opportunities include the main entry lobby and the exterior wall adjacent to the sidewalk. The main lobby features a large skylight with three beams below it that could support an additional load. The exterior wall is terra cotta in color. The selected artist may use any or all available space. Media must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, safe for children and adults, and ADA compliant. Artists using innovative concepts and materials are encouraged to apply. The selected artwork may require certification by a licensed structural engineer and review by a professional Fine Art Conservator at the selected artist's expense.

This project is open to all artists who are residents of the United States. $200,000 is available and includes all fees and expenses: materials, equipment costs, fees, labor, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, project plaque, and documentation. Three to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal and will each receive a $1,000 honorarium for a written proposal and maquette, plus a travel stipend based on distance ($250 for 50-300 miles one-way; $450 for 301-800 miles one-way; $900 for over 800 miles one-way). One site visit and personal presentation to the selection committee and public is required. Submission deadline is May 28, 2009. Finalists will be notified in June 2009, with finalist presentations in August 2009 and artwork completion and installation targeted for October 2010.

Submission requirements: letter of interest or statement of qualifications, current resume, ten images of previously completed work, and an annotated image list with title, media, dimensions, year of completion, and project description, budget, and commissioning agency if applicable. Questions should be directed to Chuck Zimmer at 505-827-6490 or 800-879-4278.
