About This Call

The Art in Public Places program is seeking an artist or artist team to create a public art commission for the College of Education at New Mexico State University. The project is open to all artists or artist teams who are legal residents of the United States with experience creating public funded commission projects of similar scope. Qualifications submitted by faculty and staff of New Mexico State University will not be considered.

The primary opportunity for artwork placement is a three-story atrium serving as the main entry point of the building, used for student assemblies, speakers and special engagements. The space is capped by a large skylight that cannot support additional structural load. Free-standing artwork cannot be accommodated on the ground floor of the atrium. Two secondary exterior locations are available: directly outside the main entrance facing Williams Avenue, and outside the entrance facing Stewart Street. The selected artist or artist team may use any or all available spaces. Media must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, suitable for outdoor display, safe for children and adults, and ADA compliant. At the selected artist's expense, artwork may require certification by a licensed structural engineer and review by a professional Fine Art Conservator.

The project budget is $170,900, which includes all fees and expenses: materials, equipment, labor, permits, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, shipping, project plaque, and documentation. Up to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal and receive a $1,000 honorarium plus a travel stipend based on distance. Submission requirements include a letter of interest or statement of qualifications, current resume or curriculum vitae, annotated image list, and ten images of previously completed work. The submission deadline is March 25, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Questions should be directed to Ben Owen, AIPP Project Coordinator, at 505-827-6490 or [email protected].
