About This Call

The Art in Public Places Program seeks an artist or artist team to create an exterior, site-specific commission project at the South East corner of the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) post in Roswell. The Local Selection Committee is interested in commissioning artwork that engages students, faculty, staff, and visitors while speaking to the rich history and heritage of NMMI, South Eastern New Mexico, and the cadets who have attended the institute. The work should be large in scale (life-size or larger) and serve as an iconic landmark identifying NMMI to passersby and welcoming visitors to the campus at the main entrance to the post.

The project could be a bronze or other material with similar patina/look sculpture or tableau. The artwork should reflect elements including the Post-Vietnam/War on Terror era to current day, honoring alumni and those who have served or given the ultimate sacrifice (men and women), symbols of cavalry heritage in consideration of the modern army, and may incorporate accurate and representational depictions of current-day soldiers. The project will contribute to a contemplative/reflective atmosphere. A concrete platform/base will be created and funded separately by NMMI. No sculptures incorporating water features will be considered. The project must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, safe for children and adults, and meet all applicable code requirements including ADA compliance. At the selected artist's expense, the artwork may require certification by licensed engineers and review by a professional fine art conservator.

This request is open to artists or artist teams working in the Southwest region (Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico). Current employees or family members of current NMMI employees are not eligible. Past employees may submit but cannot become employed by NMMI during the project duration. Up to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal and receive a $1,000 honorarium plus a travel stipend ($250-$900 depending on distance). The project budget is $246,562.00, covering all fees and expenses including materials, equipment, labor, permits, engineering documents, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, shipping, and documentation. One site visit and personal presentation to the Local Selection Committee and public will be required of each finalist.
