About This Call
The LSC invites professional artists currently residing in the United States to submit qualifications for a public art commission at the New Mexico Court of Appeals. Artists experienced in creating public funded commission projects are encouraged to apply. The selected artist will create contemporary artwork that abstractly expresses the ideals of the Court of Appeals for placement in the front exterior courtyard adjacent to the entrance of the building and/or the main entry lobby.
Artwork must be durable, low maintenance, permanent, suitable for outdoor display, safe for both children and adults, and ADA compliant. Artists using innovative concepts and materials are encouraged to apply. The selected artwork may require certification by a licensed structural engineer and review by a professional Fine Art Conservator at the selected artist's expense. $140,500 is available for this project, including all fees and expenses: materials, equipment costs, fees, labor, insurance, taxes, travel, installation, project plaque, and documentation.
Three to five finalists will be invited to submit a formal proposal and maquette. Finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium for the written proposal and maquette, plus a travel stipend based on distance ($250 for 50-300 miles one-way, $450 for 301-800 miles one-way, $900 for over 800 miles one-way). One site visit is required, including a personal presentation to the LSC and the public. All maquettes, samples, and written proposals become the property of the New Mexico Court of Appeals. Project timeline: Submission deadline April 9, 2009; Finalist notification May 2009; Finalist presentations August 2009; Artwork completion and installation October 2010.
