About This Call

The City of Golden is seeking artists to create a permanent public art installation for New Loveland Mine Park, a neighborhood park in North Golden located on the southerly side of 5th Street just east of Rubey Drive. The park was named for the Loveland Mine, whose shafts run beneath the site. The parkland features native open space areas, manicured walking and activity areas, native plants supporting pollinators and birds, a stormwater detention facility, and extensive views to the south. The site experiences high foot and bicycle traffic from the surrounding neighborhood, an elementary school, and a regional trail system.

The artwork should be a welcoming enhancement that appeals to a broad range of people and is uplifting and stimulating to the spirit, intellect, and physical senses. Artists are encouraged to consider themes including recognition of local indigenous peoples' contributions, Golden's pioneer women, the geographic and geologic setting, playfulness and whimsy, and nature and natural settings. The installation should be in harmony with the surrounding area and sensitive to existing and potential park uses. Materials must be durable given anticipated public interaction with the installation. The project budget range is $75,000, including concept design, fabrication, artist fee, travel, installation, and all other project-related expenses.

Applications must include at least three images or drawings of the proposed artwork, three images of past work, a letter of interest, a current artist resume emphasizing public art projects, a timeline for development and installation, and an estimated project budget. The call is open to artists and artist teams 18 years and older; public art experience is preferred. Selection will be based on creativity, artistic merit, technical proficiency, relationship to theme and site, long-term maintenance, durability, and impact on park design and operations. The final location must be approved by both the Public Art Commission and the City Parks and Recreation Board.
