About This Call
NJ TRANSIT is soliciting Expressions of Interest from prospective artists to design, fabricate and install artwork for the Lyndhurst Rail Station. The proposed artwork is part of the New Jersey Arts Inclusion Program, coordinated by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and NJ TRANSIT. This call is specifically for artwork for the murals of the station.
The Lyndhurst Rail Station Construction Project will include new High Level Platforms with a Station Enclosure along the Eastbound tracks and a new High Level Platform along the Westbound Tracks. Potential locations for art inclusion include: Fencing Inserts (inserts within the railing on the platforms and/or ramps), Glazing (art application to glass panels at the station building and/or wind screens along the platforms), and Mural (brick insets at the front of the station building). The total estimated budget for art inclusion is $200,000.00, with individual budgets of $65,000.00 for Fencing Inserts, $55,000.00 for Glazing, and $80,000.00 for Mural. The budget covers all costs incurred by the artist relating to design, fabrication and installation. Materials selected shall be sustainable and require minimal maintenance.
Artists interested in participating shall submit letters summarizing their interest and experience in creating public artworks, including a list of at least 3 references with contact information, resume, and photographs/images (minimum 4, maximum 6) of examples of public art installations. Three artists for each medium will be selected to prepare project-specific, in-person presentations to the Transit Arts Committee at NJ TRANSIT Headquarters in Newark, NJ. Each of the three finalists will receive a $1,000.00 stipend to cover costs associated with presentation preparation and travel expenses. Selection criteria include artistic quality, appropriateness to site and project objectives, permanence and durability, absence of public hazards, vandalism protection measures, innovation in materials and techniques, coordination with the project team, ability to meet established timeframes, and fabrication price within budget constraints.
