About This Call
New Jersey Transit is seeking artists for a public art project at the Spring Lake Rail Station, located along the North Jersey Coast Line. The Spring Lake Station features three identified locations for mural insets: Locations #1 and #3 are 89" x 48", and Location #2 is 64" x 48". Materials selected shall be sustainable, require minimal maintenance, and be appropriate for a public setting.
Selected artists will receive a $10,000 budget per station to cover design, materials, and installation. Artists are responsible for obtaining all necessary approvals prior to fabrication and coordinating with NJ TRANSIT for installation. Artists must acquire NJ TRANSIT Rail Safety certification (online) prior to installation. Finalists selected to prepare project-specific presentations will receive a $500 stipend.
Submission requirements include: a letter to the Transit Arts Committee addressing interest and qualifications; three references with contact information; 4-8 photographs of previously completed artworks (preferably public art); and a resume outlining experience with similar projects. Selection criteria include artistic quality, appropriateness to site, permanence and durability of materials, absence of public hazards, innovation, willingness to coordinate with the project team, and ability to complete work within the established timeframe. Applicants must be over 18 and current residents of New Jersey. The anticipated timeline includes jury review closing October 18, RFP invites by November 1, finalist presentations the week of November 28, and artist notification by mid-December.
