About This Call

NJ TRANSIT's Transit Arts Program, initiated in June 1994, identifies opportunities for public art to be integrated into the transportation system. This call seeks artists for the Point Pleasant Rail Station, located in Point Pleasant Beach on Arnold Avenue (Route 35), several blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and the community's downtown district. The station is ADA accessible.

Artists are invited to submit work for two locations at Pt. Pleasant Station: art for platform shelters (10 panels, 74" x 22" each, to be printed and installed via vinyl application on both inbound and outbound platforms) and art for an electrical box (inbound platform). Materials must be sustainable, require minimal maintenance, and be appropriate for a public setting. The selected artist will receive $10,000 to cover design, materials, and installation. Finalists will receive a $500 stipend for presentation preparation. Artists must obtain NJ TRANSIT Rail Safety certification prior to installation and coordinate with NJ TRANSIT throughout the process.

Submission requirements include: a letter to the Transit Arts Committee addressing interest and qualifications; three references with contact information; 4-8 photographs of previously completed artworks (preferably public art); and a resume outlining experience in similar work. Selection criteria include artistic quality, appropriateness to site, permanence and durability, absence of public hazards, innovation in materials and techniques, willingness to coordinate with the project team, and ability to complete work within the established timeframe. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and current New Jersey residents. Timeline: EOI closes September 16; jury opens September 20 and closes October 18; RFP invites by November 1; finalist presentations week of November 28; selected artist notified mid-December.
