About This Call
The City of Santa Clarita is seeking proposals from professional California artists to create artwork activations in Old Town Newhall. Selected artist(s) will create temporary, pop-up, and/or site-specific artworks that focus on creative placemaking. Individual artwork budgets and locations may vary. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals in a variety of mediums that embrace art as experience and experimental public engagement.
Design guidelines require original concepts suitable for viewing by all ages that do not result in large gatherings. Artwork may not be created for advertisement or to promote business, product, or viewpoint. Designs must not include breaches of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, corporate or organizational branding, or images of drugs. Artwork must adhere to ADA guidelines and be fabricated in materials appropriate for outdoor public display with no sharp edges or extruding hazardous components. There is no required theme, and innovation and site-specific proposals receive special consideration.
Eligibility is open to artists 18 years or older living and working in California, submitting individual or collaborative applications. Proposals must include an itemized budget, resume or CV, portfolio of 5 images with brief descriptions, and optional artist statement. Work samples should include 5-10 images, 0-5 audio files, and 0-5 video files (5-15 total samples). Projects selected will receive funding from an overall budget of $10,000. Semi-finalists will be selected in April 2021 and interviewed via video conferencing with 30-minute presentations. Selected finalists will be notified and contracted by City staff, with artworks required to be installed before October 2021. Artists may identify potential locations throughout the Old Town Newhall area.
