About This Call
The New Art Center is accepting curatorial proposals for 5- to 6-week group exhibitions from September 2014 – May 2015. Proposals must be for group exhibitions with two or more artists and can include works in single or multiple media including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, installation art, performance art, and sound art. Exhibitions can be organized around medium, process, or social, cultural, historical, theoretical, or political concepts. Curators may include their own work but it should not be the focus. Proposals must include at least one public presentation with an educational component.
The Main Gallery is approximately 2,000 square feet with 25-foot vaulted ceilings, substantial natural light, and 10' x 6' movable modular wall panels. The New Art Center provides a $1,000 curator stipend, budget for postcard invitations, public relations support, insurance up to $150,000, opening reception with refreshments, and physical assistance in preparing the space. The NAC does not provide transportation of artworks or pay for unusual installation construction. The NAC receives a 50% commission on sales of works in exhibitions.
Proposals are evaluated on quality of work, clarity and power of the underlying concept, proposed public presentations with educational components, and curator capability. All artists are eligible regardless of background. Proposals will not be considered for one-person exhibitions, general calls to artists, submissions lacking a statement of concept, those requiring financial support beyond the stipend, late or incomplete submissions, inappropriately scaled work for the gallery, or those with highly unusual installation requirements. Submissions must include a curator's statement of concept (1-3 pages), proposed public presentation(s) (up to one page), image list, resumes for curator and artists, and artist agreement confirming participation.
