About This Call
New Appalachia 2026 is an exhibition exploring the intersection of traditional Appalachian craft and contemporary artistic practices. The show showcases works that blend age-old techniques with modern materials and concepts through metals, glass, fibers, wood, printing, and ceramics. Artists connect to the region's cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of craftsmanship, with methods like wood carving, weaving, and pottery reimagined through new materials, processes, and conceptual ideas.
The exhibition runs July 25 - August 30, 2025. Awards include a $1,000 Best-in-Show prize and six 1st place prizes (one in each category), each awarded a solo show and workshop opportunities. The juror is Kyle Houser, Executive Director of Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media, an accomplished artist and educator with over two decades of experience.
Eligibility is open to visual artists 18 years and older residing in the Appalachian region as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Artists may submit up to 3 works that have not been previously exhibited at the Stifel Fine Arts Center. Entry fee is $30. Submit 1-3 high-resolution images (300 dpi) online by June 29, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MST through CaFÈ. Two-dimensional works must be properly framed with wire hanging (no sawtooth hangers) and not exceed 40 inches in any direction. Framed works larger than 24 x 30 must use plexiglass instead of single pane glass. Three-dimensional works must include display documentation if not on a standard pedestal. No installations accepted. Drop-off and shipped works accepted July 14-19. Juror notification will be emailed the week of July 6. Closing reception is August 30, 2025, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Pick-up dates for unsold work are September 1-6.
