Negative Spaces

The Rhode Island Watercolor Society is accepting submissions for an online exhibition exploring negative spaces in art. Negative space refers to the area around and between objects in a composition, which artists can use to make focal points more prominent, provide visual rest, or add subtle shapes and elements to the narrative of the piece.

The exhibition runs November 18th through December 15th, with an online opening reception on Friday, December 1st at 6pm via Zoom. Notification of acceptance will be sent November 17th. Over $400 in cash prizes will be awarded. Submissions must be 1-3 images of 2D artwork completed within the last 10 years. Acceptable media include watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oils, ink, casein, egg tempera, and other 2D media (excluding photography, digital art, and reproductions). Work must not have been previously exhibited in a Rhode Island Watercolor Society juried show, must be original work not copied from copyrighted material or created under another's guidance, and must not be based on tutorials. Digital images submitted must accurately represent the actual work with no alterations.

Entry fee is $15 per image for non-members and $10 per image for members (use code riwsmember for first entry and riwsmember2 for additional entries). Open to all artists in the United States. If artwork is sold through the online gallery, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society receives 35% of the sale. Artwork may be marked as not for sale by entering 0 in the price section or contacting [email protected]. No accepted entry may be withdrawn prior to the close of the exhibition.
