NCECA 2022 Annual: Belonging

The 2022 NCECA Annual exhibition, titled Belonging, will be hosted by the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California, from February 20 – May 8, 2022. The museum will dedicate more than 4,000 square feet of space to the exhibition's installation. The exhibition is curated by Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy and features invited artists Alex Anderson, Natalia Arbelaez, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Salvador Jimenez-Flores, and Habiba El-Sayed, alongside works selected through an open call for submission.

The exhibition explores belonging as both a sense of connectedness to place, social or cultural groups, and as a concept tied to ownership and power dynamics. The curator examines how belonging relates to identity, acceptance, and the ways individuals navigate and resist oppressive systems. The exhibition showcases coded approaches to inhabiting inhospitable environments and the role of community in fostering inclusion.

Submissions are open to ceramic artists over 18 years of age who are not currently matriculating for a degree in higher education. Entry fee is $45.00 for non-members; NCECA members receive complimentary entry. Artists may submit up to three distinct works with no more than two media files per work, not to exceed six total media files. All works must be primarily ceramic (mixed media accepted only when clay is dominant), responsive to the exhibition theme, and able to fit through venue entryways and be safely installed.
