About This Call
2019 NCECA ANNUAL EXHIBITION: THE FORM WILL FIND ITS WAY: CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC SCULPTURAL ABSTRACTION
Curated by Elizabeth Carpenter and hosted by the Katherine E. Nash Gallery at the University of Minnesota (405 21st Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55455), this exhibition will run from January 22 – March 30, 2019. The NCECA Annual blends invitational and open juried models of exhibition development. The curator's vision generates an organizing concept and invites five leading artists whose work expands on the exhibition's conceptual framework. Additional works and artists are selected through an open call for submissions.
Elizabeth Carpenter, an independent curator, writer, and educator, previously served as curator of visual arts at the Walker Art Center (2001-2015) and on the curatorial team for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's Robert Rauschenberg: A Retrospective (1997). She currently teaches art history and theory at the University of Minnesota. Carpenter's curatorial vision for this exhibition explores experimental, cross-disciplinary, and aesthetically diverse artistic practices in ceramics, focusing on sculptural exploration of abstraction rather than traditional or functional ceramic objects. She is seeking artists working in interdisciplinary modes who challenge conventional installation strategies and explore phenomenology, scale, perception, and performative strategies.
Eligibility is open to artists over 18 years of age who are not currently matriculating for a degree. All works must be primarily ceramic (mixed media accepted only when clay is dominant). Works must be completed within two years prior to the entry deadline and be responsive to the exhibition theme. Works previously shown in NCECA exhibitions are not eligible. Entry fee is $35 for non-members and $20 for NCECA members. Artists may submit up to three distinct works with no more than two media files per work, not to exceed six total media files (images, audio, or video). All submissions must include an artist statement (limit 1000 characters) and artwork statements. Jurying is conducted from images of actual works; artists' names may not appear in any images or file names. Submission deadline is June 20, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
