About This Call

The Artists in Residence program offers up to three selected artists the opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas. The residency term is approximately six months, running from August 15, 2019 to February 10, 2020. Selected artists receive free studio space, living space, retail gallery space, and utilities. Each artist also receives a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. If an artist leaves early, they must repay a pro-rated amount of the stipend.

Eligible applicants must be artists working in 2-D or 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota for the entire six-month term, be fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency and must pass a background check. No pets are allowed.

Artists are responsible for all groceries, equipment, supplies, and transportation. The residency provides basic furnishings (queen bed, dresser, desk) and shared spaces (kitchen, laundry room, den, bathrooms) but does not furnish specialized equipment such as kilns, darkrooms, or forges. Artists must keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Wednesday through Sunday and work rotating shifts. For artwork sold through The Arts Council events or at the Horlock House Gallery, artists receive 70% of sales with 30% going to The Arts Council. The City of Navasota and The Arts Council offer PR opportunities including radio interviews, promotion at events, and newsletter inclusion. Teaching opportunities may be available. Applications will be juried with finalists selected for Skype interviews. Final decisions will be made in mid-July 2019. Entry fee: $20.00. Submit 1-6 images, and up to 3 audio or video files.
