About This Call

The Artists in Residence program offers up to three selected artists the opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas for approximately six months (August 14, 2017 to February 12, 2018). Each artist will receive free studio space, living space, retail gallery space, and utilities. Selected artists will also receive a one-time $600 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with supply purchases. If an artist leaves early, they must repay a pro-rated amount of the stipend.

Any artist working in 2-D mixed media, 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media is eligible to apply. Applicants must be available to live in Navasota for the entire six-month term, be fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency and must be able to pass a background check.

Artists are responsible for all groceries, equipment, and supplies necessary for artwork production, as well as transportation to and from the residency. Artists must maintain the living and working quarters, keep the Horlock Gallery open to the public Wednesday through Sunday 9:00am-6:00pm, and work gallery shifts. The artist must be the sole occupant of their residency location with no pets allowed. Sales of artwork at art fairs, gallery shows organized by The Arts Council, and at the Horlock House follow a 70/30 split, with 70% going to the artist and 30% to The Arts Council. The Arts Council may have paid teaching opportunities available for participating artists. Applications will be juried with finalists selected for Skype interviews. Final decisions will be made in late June 2017. Entry fee: $25.00. Submit 1-6 images of your work.
