About This Call

The Artists in Residence program offers an opportunity to live and work in the historic Horlock Home in Navasota, Texas. The residency accommodates three participating artists with living and studio space, as well as a retail gallery space. The term is approximately three months, running from May 20th, 2019 to August 12th, 2019.

The City of Navasota and The Arts Council provide studio space, living space, retail space, and utilities rent-free for the residency term. Selected artists receive a one-time $300 stipend at the beginning of the residency to assist with groceries, fuel, and supply purchases. Artists are responsible for supplying their own materials, equipment, food, and transportation. The residency housing includes a queen bed, dresser, and desk in each room, with shared kitchen, laundry room, den, and bathrooms. Artists must bring their own specialized equipment (kilns, darkrooms, forges, power tools, etc.) or arrange to rent equipment in the area. Public transportation is limited, so applicants must have reliable transportation.

Artists must live in the Horlock House for the entire residency term and maintain the living and working quarters. All three artists are required to work shifts staffing the Horlock Gallery during scheduled public hours. For pieces sold through The Arts Council events or at the Horlock House Gallery, artists receive 70% of sales with 30% going to The Arts Council. Artists may not hold a full-time or part-time job during the residency and must pass a background check. Teaching opportunities may be available. Any artist concentrating in 2-D mixed media, 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts, literature, music, painting, poetry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, or digital media is eligible to apply. Applicants must be available for the entire three-month term, fluent in English, have reliable transportation, and be eligible to live in the United States. Applications will be juried with finalists selected for phone or Skype interviews. Final decisions will be made in mid-April 2019.
